Goodbye {For Now}

The past few months, I have been struggling to keep up with my everyday life and this blog and I have finally come to the point where I had to decide to either devote myself fully to the blog or take a break. I decided to take a break (as if you didn’t already know from the title). I am not sure how long this will last, but I feel like, for now, being a toddler mom, a transcriptionist (at night), a volunteer at my church, and a small group leader is more than enough! I am going to keep trying new recipes and crafts and maybe when I come back to blogging, I will have lots of fun and yummy things for you guys! I am also going to work on my PHOTOGRAPHY skills (or lack thereof).

See you soon!

{New Recipe} Orange Dream

Orange Dream {}

(Sorry for the awful picture!)

This drink has been my obsession for quite a while now and I am finally getting around to sharing it with you guys! Months ago, I purchased this Three Olives Cake Vodka after tasting it at my local liquor store. It has such an awesome “non-alcoholy” (I am aware that is not a word, but you know what I mean) flavor to it and I am not a fan of the taste of hard liquor. When I brought it home, I decided to use some things I had around the house to mix up a concoction with it and this is what I came up with…

Orange Dream

2 oz. Three Olives Cake Vodka (you can purchase the cheaper kind, but I don’t recommend it, it just doesn’t taste the same….trust me!)

6 oz. Orange Juice, I normally drink OJ with pulp, but the non-pulp is better in this drink

A dash of half and half (or whipping cream)

Now, there are two ways  you can create this:

1. You can pour all the ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake, shake, shake! Then strain it into  a glass (this is how I made it in the picture)

2. Put all the ingredients into a blender with 1 cup of ice and blend until smooth. This way makes a nice frothy top from the cream. (Sorry, no picture of this)

Both ways are super yummy so go ahead and make them both! Enjoy!

{New Recipe} Super Easy Strawberry Shortcake

I LOVE strawberries and one of my favorite desserts to make with strawberries is  strawberry shortcake. I don’t care so much for the cakey version of shortcake though and found a really simple and delicious recipe for “classic” strawberry shortcake using Bisquick. … Continue reading

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas {For Dads}

I once had a friend tell me that her husband doesn’t buy her a gift for Mother’s day because she is not “his” mother. I almost fell over backwards in my seat at such nonsense. She had birthed and raised their two sons! How on earth could he think that he should not buy her something to show his appreciation once a year?! It doesn’t have to be expensive jewelry or lavish vacations (those are nice too), just a small something to show that you are extremely thankful for all the hard work, patience, sleeplessness, and body disfigurement it takes to be a mother. The story only gets worse because, of course, she always bought something for him for Father’s Day…that is a whole other situation, don’t even get me started.

Anyway, I realize that some guys just don’t know what to get for that special woman who carried their children for 40 whole weeks (32 for me) so, I compiled a list of things that might give those guys some ideas. (Ladies, feel free to leave this page open on the computer for that special man in your life to give him a little hint!)

5 Really Cool Gifts for the Woman who Housed your child in her Uterus:

#1 – Justin Timberlake’s new album. Any hip mom would LOVE to jam out to this in the car (without the kids)! Find it here.

#2 – Something cool from World Market! I love this teapot, for instance. Or you could always go with a gift card, that way she can pick her awesome item herself (for those of you who are not gifted at the art of gifting).

Tea Pot

#3 – A gift certificate for a massage. You can’t go wrong with pampering. Which brings me to…

#4 – A mani/pedi perfect to get her ready for those flippy floppies!

#5 – TIME ALONE! Give her a day (heck a couple of hours) to be at the house (or out shopping) by HERSELF! As mothers, we tend to lose out on our “alone” time and this is one gift you don’t even have to spend money on (it is a win-win).

So, that’s it. Five gifts that you can give to the mother of your offspring that are sure to get her bragging to all of her girlfriends about what an amazing husband she has!

Have a happy weekend!

Easter Dessert: Strawberry Cream Puff Cake {Pie}

We didn’t do a whole lot for Easter this year. We stayed at home and didn’t have any company  (well, except for Nana, she came to see the little one). I made a simple crock pot roast, mashed potatoes, and roasted asparagus. It was super simple and delicious. I wanted to find a great dessert that wouldn’t be too sweet (because we would be so full from dinner) and used in season fruit. I scoured my Pinterest page until I found the perfect one, Strawberry Cream Puff Cake from The Girl Who Ate Everything. It was super easy and used strawberries which are my favorite.

Strawberry Cream Puff Pie {}

I made the “pie” crust earlier in the day so that it could cool before I filled it with the cream. This reminded me of a pie more than a cake. That is why I am calling it strawberry cream puff pie!

This is the mixture after I added the flour and it turned into a “dough” consistency.

Strawberry Cream Puff Pie {}I put it in the mixer and added the eggs one at a time until it was all well incorporated.

Strawberry Cream Puff Pie {}

I tried to use my fingers to spread the batter up the sides of the pan like the original recipe said, but that didn’t work out so well for me. I ended up using a spatula.

Strawberry Cream Puff Pie {}

This was the finished cream puff “pie” shell. Not too pretty, but who cares! I am about to top that thing with some yumminess.

Strawberry Cream Puff Pie {}

After I creamed the sugar and cream cheese together, I added the orange zest, vanilla and whipping cream. I whipped it all together until the mixture was smooth and had nice stiff peaks.

Strawberry Cream Puff Pie {}

I added the finished cream filling to the puff pie shell.

Strawberry Cream Puff Pie {}

I sliced my strawberries earlier in the day and put 1 tsp of sugar on them just to give them this shiny, sweet glaze. They were definitely ripe and sweet enough without the sugar, but I love how pretty they look with that glaze on top.

Strawberry Cream Puff Pie {}

I left the ring on the pan until it was time to serve it up. It was so pretty!

Strawberry Cream Puff Pie {}

I made a little whipped cream (without any sugar) from the leftover heavy cream. This was such a perfect dessert. Not too sweet and so yummy. I will definitely be making this again while it is still strawberry season here!

You can find the original recipe here on The Girl Who Ate Everything.

Liebster Award {Love}

I awoke this morning to a wonderful message from a sweet fellow blogger, Ariean at One Krieger Chick, informing me that she had nominated my blog for a Liebster Award. I was so excited, but also not sure at all what this “award” was all about. So, naturally I googled it and found that the Liebster Award is given to up and coming bloggers who have less than 200 followers as a way to get the word out about their blog and to connect with fellow bloggers. It sounds like a really great way to do what most bloggers do anyway…talk about ourselves!

The rules for the award are:

1. Each person must post 11 things about themselves.

2. Answer the questions that the person who nominated you created and create 11 new questions for the people you are nominating.

3. Choose 11 bloggers to nominate and link them in your post.

4. Go to their page and tell them you nominated them. (So they won’t be left in the dark!)

5. No tag backs!

11 Random Things About Me:

1. I am an only child.

2. I have always wanted to live on a farm (minus all the work).

3. I had a pet rabbit who lived in a large cage in my room, her name was Cadbury.

4. I used to hate red wine.

5. Before I got married, I hated guacamole. Now I eat it all the time.

6. My husband is from the opposite side of the country.

7. Growing up (and even now) I always wanted to live in one of the abandoned old houses I see along the highways.

8. I hate salt water and the beach.

9. I can’t stand watching sports on TV, but love going to live games.

10. Sometimes I get super obsessed with something and I have to learn everything there is to learn about it.

11. I am a horrible singer, but love to sing karaoke!

Here are the Questions I Answered:

{From One Krieger Chick}

1. What is the project in your home you are most proud of?

My kitchen sink! We had a horrible stainless steel one and I decided to put a nice white ceramic type one in. I thought it would be super easy, but because the new one was much deeper, it took a lot of re-working of the pipes to make it fit. It was such a pain, but in the end it was totally worth it.

2. What is your “secret weapon” that gets you through the day?

NAP TIME! I have a toddler and the only time I get anything done is when he is napping. I have heart palpitations when I think about him not napping anymore.

3. What holiday do you most look forward to?

Christmas. For the meaning of it and the time I get to spend with my family. My husband gets a good amount of time off from work around Christmas and it is nice for us to all be together.

4. Name a blog that inspires you…why?

Pretty much any blog inspires me right now, I am such a newby to this whole blogging thing and it is nice to just read what other people are doing and get great ideas!

5. Do you have a favorite book? What are you reading now?

I don’t really have a favorite book…I love mystery books and history books. Right now, I am reading Resolution for Women with my small group from church.

6. Have you experienced a Pinterest fail?

HA! Too many to count, but the one that stands out in my mind (because I actually followed the directions to a T and it still came out horribly wrong) was the mozzarella cheese bites. You know, the one where you take a stick of string cheese and cut it into bites, dip it in the flour mixture and bake it. Well, mine turned into mozzarella cheese crisps, flat as a pancake.

7. What is your favorite food to order in a restaurant?

Dessert! I love a good dessert, especially when I don’t have to make it!

8. Name something from your Bucket List that might surprise people.

I probably should be ashamed of myself, I don’t really have a bucket list! I really and truly want to live on a farm though, that would be my dream.

9. Is there a movie you could watch over and over again?

The Wedding Date.

10. If you were given a plane ticket to leave tomorrow and go anywhere, where would you go?

Britain. We went there for 9 days on our honeymoon and it was the best 9 days of my life. I would live there if I could…maybe on a farm?!

11. What is your go-to fashion accessory?

A necklace, any necklace. I don’t wear a lot of jewelry, but when I have a necklace on, I feel “dressed up”. Silly huh?

Here are the bloggers I want to nominate for the Liebster Award:

C’est La Vie

Awesome Beers

Beer Up Your Life

Chocolate, Cheese, and Wine

Red’s Kitchen Diaries

Vino & Vintage

Pound Grape

156, Hungerlane

The Fabulous Food Fairy

A Fork in Each Hand

Questions for my nominees:

1. What made you want to start your blog?

2. What Disney character do you best relate to?

3. If you could pick anywhere to live, where would that be?

4. What is your go-to recipe?

5. Are you a coffee person or a tea person?

6. What is one thing you have accomplished that you are the most proud of?

7. What is one place you would never want to travel to?

8. Beer or wine?

9. What was your favorite subject in school?

10. What is your dream job?

11. If you could go back and talk to your “middle school” self, what is the one thing you would tell yourself that you now know?

Yay!! This was so much fun! Make sure you all link back to me so I can see the answers to your questions.

Sorry that I had no other way to contact some of you other than commenting on your posts!
